Industry Requirements
Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0
Being CMMC compliant is a requirement by the DoD for all contractors and was designed to enhance cyber protection standards. It went into effect November 30, 2020 with the basic features of the framework being a tiered model (cybersecurity standards at progressively advanced levels), assessment requirement, and implementation through contracts (requirement to obtain a specific CMMC level as a condition to contract award). The DoD announced an update to the original framework in November 2021 which provides a more streamlined framework with 3 tiers as opposed to 5, and aligns with the NIST cybersecurity standards.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework
The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2014 directed the NIST to develop a framework for reducing cyber risks to critical infrastructure. The features of the framework include:
1) Core - set of activities and measures that leverages an organizations existing policies and procedures to reduce cybersecurity risks.
2) Implementation Tiers - different levels of risk mitigation activities and measures to be implemented.
3) Profiles - Measures the alignment of existing organization objectives to the framework and identifies opportunities for improving cybersecurity.
